Quick Tips on Buying a Dress Shirt

Buying a t-shirt is easy; buying a dress shirt, not so much. T-shirts don’t have to fit the way a dress shirt does which is what makes them a little harder to purchase. The perfect dress shirt needs to have a tailored fit. If you’re lucky, you should be able to buy one off the shelves but if your body proportions don’t fit the shirt as it is, the shirt will have to be adjusted for you.

Here’s what you need to keep in mind when buying a dress-shirt:

1) Measure yourself

You don’t require specific measurements shopping for casual wear but when you’re buying suits and dress shirts, accurate measurements are essential. For a dress shirt, you’ll need to measure the circumference of your neck, the length of your sleeve and your waist-size.

2) Know your collar-styles

You may not have noticed but dress shirts also have various styles. The styles of collar differ and not all of them are appropriate business attire. Pin and Tab collars should only be worn with ties. Button-down collars are too casual for formal business-wear. Stiff collars can be uncomfortable for some. Before purchasing a dress shirt, have an idea of collar you want.

3) Colors matter

Dress shirts may not have the variety of colors t-shirts do but their colors still matter. For a highly formal business event, it’s best to go with a high-quality, plain white shirt. You can opt for light stripes on a white for out-of-office meetings, pale solid colors for regular business days and patterned dress shirts for casual-wear.

4) Price does not reflect the quality

You don’t need to spend a fortune to stock your wardrobe with high-quality shirts. Don’t assume that a higher price means the shirt is going to be of greater quality too. Big brands charge higher because of the value of the brand name, not because the shirt is of better quality. It is possible to find high-quality dress shirts at affordable prices—you just need to know where to look.
